Does Experiencing Sexual Arousal Nullify One’s Prayer?

Answered by Shaykh Irshaad Sedick

Question

Is it permissible to pray while experiencing morning arousal? It takes some time to subside, and waiting too long may cause one to miss Tahajjud.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate. May Allah alleviate our difficulties and guide us to what pleases Him. Amin.

There are a limited number of factors that invalidate prayer. Having an erection is not one of them. Thus, it would not affect the validity of your prayer. [Nawawi, Minhaj al-Talibin]

However, deliberately thinking of anything outside the prayer while praying is reprehensible and diminishes the spiritual value and impact of the prayer, and Allah knows best.

I pray this is of benefit and that Allah guides us all.
