Is the Hadith of Forbidding People to Take-Off Their Outer Garments at Funerals Correct?

Shafi'i Fiqh

Question

Hadith in Ibn Majah mentions something about the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) forbidding people to take off their outer garments at funerals. Could you please explain?

Answer

The hadith referred to in the question is hadith #1485 and has been deemed very weak, or even fabricated, by hadith scholars. [Shuayb al-Arnaut, Sharh al-Sindi maa taliqat al-Busirial-Sunan li Ibn Majah]

Regardless of its inauthenticity, the meaning of the hadith is that the pre-Islamic Arabs would go overboard in expressing sadness over the dead and partially undress; the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) is being quoted telling not to do that.

I pray this helps.
