Can Minhaj al-Talibin by Imam Nawawi Be Studied Without a Teacher?
Shafi'i Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Irshaad Sedick
Question
What are good resources for studying Minhaj al-Talibin if I only have access to the Howard translation and no teacher nearby?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
Minhaj al-Talibin by Imam Nawawi is a foundational and highly advanced legal manual in the Shafi‘i School. Due to the brevity and depth of its legal phrasing and the necessity of understanding the relied-upon positions in the madhhab, it is not intended for self-study, especially without a teacher. Attempting to study it independently, even with the Howard translation, may lead to confusion or misapplication.
Instead, begin with a structured and gradual curriculum, such as the Shafi‘i Fiqh Track offered freely at SeekersGuidance.org. This program progresses from beginner to advanced levels under qualified teachers and prepares one to approach texts like the Minhaj with proper understanding and context. When you complete the curriculum, seek a qualified teacher, either locally or online, for private instruction in the Minhaj.
Allah Most High says:
“So ask those who have knowledge if you do not know.” [Quran, 16:43]
May Allah grant you beneficial knowledge and make your path in sacred learning easy and blessed.
