How Should Upcoming Expenses Be Treated in Zakat Calculation?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Can we deduct expected expenses, such as the cost of building a house, which will occur next month, from the zakat and zakat is due this month?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

You can deduct your known upcoming expenses until your Zakat anniversary date, but not beyond that, such as in your case, with the expected costs of building your house, which will occur next month. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
