Is Microneedling Permissible If a Hyaluronic Acid Serum Enters the Skin During the Procedure?

Question

Is microneedling permissible if a hyaluronic acid serum enters the skin during the procedure, and is this considered like fillers or different?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid comes from animal, plant, or synthetic sources.

Plant-based or synthetic Hyaluronic acid is permissible.

For animal-derived collagen and Hyaluronic acid, since non-Muslims make most of them and the animals are not slaughtered Islamically, they are generally not permissible unless they come from a permissible animal’s bone or hair.

If derived from animals and it undergoes istihala, such products are permissible if the remaining ingredients are permissible.

Micro-Needling

Micro-needling for any type of restorative purpose is permissible,  but not for modifications like fighting aging, which is impermissible.

However, using micro-needling for normal aging signs, like wrinkles after 30, for example, is changing Allah’s creation. These aging signs are a natural part of human development.

Key Principle – Cosmetical v Restorative

A treatment performed solely for cosmetic or augmentation reasons is not permissible. It is only permitted when a restorative procedure is used to correct abnormalities and defects.

There is a key principle here. If something is abnormal and defective, restoring it to its natural form is permitted. This is considered a restorative procedure rather than a cosmetic or beautification procedure. Medical restorative procedures aimed at correcting defects and abnormalities are not seen as altering Allah’s creation.

For example, a person may be born with a crooked nose, cleft lip, or extra finger. Restorative medical procedures to fix these defects are acceptable, as they involve correcting an abnormality.
