Is It Permissible to Keep a Wooden Plaque with the Names of Allah on It?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
What should I do with a wooden plaque with Allah’s and the Prophet’s names, Surat al-Qalam verses, and ‘SAW’ found at my grandfather’s house? Someone said it might be impermissible. I’m unsure how to dispose of it properly—burning, burying, or keeping it high might be difficult or oppose my family’s views. Is keeping it on a high shelf acceptable, or would not acting be sinful or make me a disbeliever?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
It is permissible to keep and hang the frame. It has a Quranic verse, Allah’s name, and the name of His Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). If opposed, keep it respectfully somewhere high up or in a safe place, or give it away. Not acting won’t make you a disbeliever if you have respect for it in your heart.
