Can I Buy Baby Clothes with Cartoons and Animals Displayed on Them?

Question

Can I buy baby clothes with cartoons and animals displayed on them for my newborn?

Answer

Thank you for your question. It is permissible to buy such clothing for babies because these are not images of things that are worthy of respect or worship, but better to be avoided. For example, if you are given such an outfit as a gift, you don’t need to return it to criticize the giver.

You could dress your baby in it to make them happy and your child would grow out of it in a few months anyway. Then you could donate it.

Cartoons and animals are not the kinds of things that conscious Muslims put on their children. Children get easily attached to images and ideas of characters that are not real and may even end up imitating non-Muslims. As such, Muslims try to choose, simple, cute, non-advertising, non-consumerism kinds of clothes.

I faced the same problem when I had my children and we were able to find clothes with cars, trucks, and other inanimate objects. If you try, you will be able to avoid them. May Allah give you tawfiq with your shopping and may Allah bless your family!
