Is It True That a Woman Is Only Entitled to Have Intimacy Once throughout Her Life?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is it true that Abu Hanifa stated that a woman is entitled to intimacy with her husband only once throughout her marriage? If she requires more, what should be done according to Abu Hanifa, and how are women expected to avoid haram?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health.
It is not true and incorrect to ascribe this to Imam Abu Hanifa (Allah be pleased with him). A husband is religiously obliged to fulfill the sexual needs of his wife and not deprive her of this right. Refusing sex without a genuine reason or excuse is a sin in the eyes of Allah in the Next life.
Many jurists (fuqaha) hold that it is obligatory for the husband to engage in sexual intimacy with his wife every so often.
