Can I Follow Another Madhhab on the Issue of Expiation (Kaffara) for Breaking One’s Fast through Masturbation?

Answered by Shaykh Irshaad Sedick

Question

May someone who follows Maliki Fiqh follow the view of Hanafi and Shafi’i scholars on paying an expiation (kaffara) for breaking one’s fast by Masturbation?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate. May Allah guide us to what pleases Him.

We urge you to repent from the sin which is unlawful according to the dominant views of all four Schools. It is permissible to follow a different school on individual issues, though we must caution you from doing so as a habit, and Allah knows best.
