Does Islam Restrict Talents?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Some are born with talents like drawing, dancing, and music. Whatever we have is a blessing from Allah, then why is it restricted? Keeping dogs in the house is not good, but when I read about incidents where a dog saved its master, my iman decreases.

Answer

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

Just like human inventions, which have manuals to follow, the item will not operate otherwise. Similarly, the creator of humans, Allah Most High, has a manual of life, His Quran and Prophetic sunna and way of life, that we need to follow; otherwise, we will not function and fulfill our purpose in life and will go astray.

We are restricted to keep dogs to keep them inside but allowed to keep them outside.  We can dance in front of our husbands as long we do not follow the way of the corrupt; we can draw, but as long as it is non-facial. There is wisdom and reason. Sometimes, our limited minds cannot grasp or comprehend.

Why Are Some Things Prohibited?

Whereas the permissible is generally without harm, the prohibited has been prohibited because it is harmful. The harm may be worldly or spiritual, individual or social, direct or indirect. But the harm is real.
