How Should Muslims Handle Uncertainty About Pesticides on Food?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I fear some pesticides may be impermissible and have begun avoiding basic foods due to uncertainty about contamination and how to wash them. What should I do?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
If it is sold publicly as food and contains no clear haram ingredients, it is halal for you. Just wash thoroughly using the best method and eat to remove pesticides. Do not let doubt take away Allah’s ease. If you can, buy organic when reasonable.
If you keep doing this, your anxiety will spread to other areas as well. Islam does not want you to suffer from constant uncertainty.
Allah says in the Quran, “Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship.” [2:185]
Shaytan sometimes causes a person to doubt basic halal things until life becomes unbearable. So, try to follow what others generally do, and don’t let worry and anxiety take over.
I pray this helps with your question.
