Is It Permissible To Call Someone “Lord” As A Title?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is it shirk or haram to call someone “lord” as a title of respect or to watch shows where this is done?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
It is not shirk (associating a partner with Allah) to call someone lord. The word lord has several meanings: someone who has power, respect, etc., and is used for the head of the community and people. However, one should be cautious when calling and addressing someone as such unless given this title or referring to someone who has been given it.
