Is It Permissible to Wear Hijab Accessories That Are Simple?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

I was wondering if one could wear hair accessories with hijab. This is not to be flashy or attractive, but just to make it easier for me and more enjoyable. It wouldn’t be anything dramatic just something simple and pretty for me. I was wondering what the ruling on this was, as I see many other sisters doing it and, I am currently working on hiding my adornments but it is difficult. Can you please help?

Answer

Thank you for your question. It is permissible to wear the accessories that you speak in the way that you described it: nothing too dramatic or flashy.

There is something to be said about hijabis looking proper, neat, eloquent and well put-together, as it lends a good name to Muslim women and is the sunna of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace).

Qais bin Bishr al-Taghlibi reported that his father said that Abu al-Darda’ (May Allah be pleased with him) said to him: “Tell us something that will benefit us and will not harm you.” He said that he heard the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) say while coming back from an expedition: “You are returning to your brothers, so set your saddles and clothes in order so that you look tidy and graceful. Allah hates untidiness.” [Abu Dawud]

May Allah give you the best of this world and the next.
