What Brings Hope After Falling Into Sin?
Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
Question
After falling into a past sinful habit once, I now fear Allah will punish me in a specific way and constantly check for signs of it—how can I overcome this fear and find hope in His mercy?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
How we perceive Allah Most High and our relationship with Him is of massive importance for us as Muslims.
Allah Most High says in a Divine Saying (Hadith Qudsi),
“I am (to My servant according to) how he thinks of Me. So, let him think good of Me.” [Tabarani]
How to Overcome Negative Thoughts
Even without considering the above text, one must be reasonable in one’s thought process. There is no basis for negative thoughts and unreasonable fear of Allah Most High.
One must consider all of the blessings that Allah Most High has given you throughout your life, those of a worldly nature and those of a religious nature. The fact that you are Muslim and concerned with your relationship with Allah Most High to the extent that you felt the drive to submit this question – all of this is evidence of Allah’s love and mercy for you.
Allah Most High says,
“When My servants ask you (O Prophet) about Me: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me. So let them respond (with obedience) to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided (to the Right Way).” [Quran; 2:186]
The fact that you are asking Allah is proof that Allah is near to you in His mercy and care for you.
The Most Beautiful Prohibition
Of all the prohibitions in the Quran, the most profound and most beautiful, especially concerning how we should view our Lord Most High, is the following verse:
Allah Most High says,
“Say, (O Prophet, that Allah says,) “O My servants who have exceeded the limits against their souls! Do not lose hope in Allah’s mercy, for Allah certainly forgives all sins.1 He is indeed the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Quran; 39:53]
Advice
It is important to take the Sacred law seriously and to stay away from sin like one would stay away from consuming poison. If and when we fall into sin, we must turn to Allah Most High with sincere repentance.
That said, we should never allow ourselves to take our “fear” of Allah to an unhealthy extreme, such that it leads to despair and an anxious awaiting of a befalling punishment.
Whenever you find yourself drifting toward despair, read the Quranic verses and Prophetic narrations related to Allah’s all-encompassing mercy.
Hope this helps
Allah knows best
