What Do I Do in an Aggressive LGBTQ Work Environment?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

As a nurse, I work at a hospital that strongly supports LGBTQ rights and inclusivity, including visible pride flags and pronouns sharing. It also accommodates Muslims with a prayer room and flexible prayer times.

Given the widespread support for LGBTQ rights in hospitals nationwide, is it sinful to work here, or should I seek employment at a less openly supportive place like a GP clinic?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question and for seeking guidance in this matter. Allah (Most High) reward you for your patience, and may He protect us all from these challenging times.

I am sad to hear about your work situation. It is affecting you and should affect anyone. You are not sinful working at the hospital despite the challenges. Continue working at this hospital until you find a better, secure, and suitable alternative where you will not have to go through something like this.

Final Dua in Prayer, and Always

Make this dua your final dua after al-Salat al-Ibrahimiyya (Allah bless him and give him peace). From now on, it should be part of our daily duas; our tongues should be kept moist and read as and when we face these challenging moments and thoughts.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: When one of you recites the tashahhud, let him seek refuge with Allah Most High from our things:

“اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَمِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ، وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ”

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah, the Dajjal.” [Nasa’i]
