How Do I Deal with the Growing Trend of LGBTQ All around Us?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

In today’s society, it seems that the LGBTQ community is more welcome by society at large. It scares me when I read that some people were attracted to the same gender at a very young age.

How do I protect my child from that and other haram things? What kind of dua should I say? And what should I do? It’s not easy being a parent.

Answer

Thank you for your question. Your sentiment is the same as many parents in the West, and I pray that Allah protects all children alike from that which displeases Him.

LGBTQ

The trend that you mention has entered mainstream films & TV, social media, and public schools, and really is everywhere you look and hard to avoid. It is scary, and it is one of the signs of the end of times.

It was reported from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “By Him Who sent me with the Truth, this earth will not pass away until people are afflicted with landslides, are pelted with stones, and are transformed into animals.” The people asked, “When will that be, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “When you see women riding in the saddle, when singers are common, when bearing false witness becomes widespread, and when men lie with men and women with women.” [Ahmad]

Action

There are a few steps that you can take to help your family face these challenges:

  1. Supplicate to Allah first to protect your children from this evil;
  2. Minimize their exposure to it by keeping them in Islamic environments with religious, Muslim friends;
  3. Limit or eliminate their intake of TV & film that now contain these elements;
  4. Speak to them about it, its evils and the displeasure of Allah and the curse of Allah that it brings upon one;
  5. Tell them the story of Prophet Lut and his people;
  6. Ask them not to speak or joke about it as they grow older, as mentioning falsehood for no reason is sinful;
  7. Most importantly, teach them Islam well, its spiritual and intellectual aspects, and with their deep conviction and faith, they will not go astray, by the grace of Allah.

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said about the end of times, “There will be soon a period of turmoil in which the one who sits will be better than one who stands, and the one who stands will be better than one who walks, and the one who walks will be better than one who runs. He who would watch them will be drawn by them. So he who finds a refuge or shelter against it should make it his resort.” [Muslim]
