What is the Ruling of Using Money Without Someone’s Permission but Returning it Later?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

My father gave me money to keep in the bank, and I used 700 rupees to pay the onboarding fees to zomato, a food delivery company, without informing my father.

However, two days later, I confessed to him that I had spent some of his money and returned it to him without disclosing where I had spent it. Is the earnings I received from Zomato halal or haram?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

It was wrong of you to use money with your father’s permission. However, confessing later and returning it redeemed your past mistake. Ask for forgiveness from him.

Regret is Part of Sound Repentance

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Regret is part of repentance.” [Ibn Maja]
