Question

How can one cultivate sincere care and concern for others in modern times?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

Sincere concern for others is a core Islamic value. True sincerity (ikhlas) means acting only for Allah’s sake—seeking His reward, pleasure, and closeness.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Whoever relieves a believer of a distress of this world, Allah will relieve them of a distress on the Day of Judgment.” [Muslim]

“The most beloved of people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to others.” [Tabarani]

Ways to Cultivate Sincere Concern for Others

1. Purify Your Intentions Renew your intention regularly. Do every act of kindness seeking Allah’s pleasure.

2. Reflect on the Prophet’s Example Study the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him), who was a mercy to all creation.

3. Control the Ego Embrace humility. Fast regularly and restrain desires to weaken the ego’s pull.

4. Be Active in a Community Serve at your local mosque or charity and build meaningful social ties.

5. Use Social Media for Good Promote beneficial content, but prioritize sincere, real-life connection and action.

6. Pray for Others Include others in your du’a. The angels reply, “Ameen, and for you as well.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Religion is sincere concern.” They asked, “For whom?” He replied, “For Allah, His Book, His Messenger, the leaders of the Muslims, and the common people.” [Muslim]

May Allah grant us sincerity and true concern for others.
