Is It Permissible in Islam to Obtain Pet Insurance?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I own a pet cat but may not be able to afford vet care if it falls seriously ill. Is it permissible in Islam to obtain pet insurance in this situation?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

It is not permissible to obtain any type of insurance unless it is mandatory by the country’s law. However, there is an alternative. Shariah-compliant pet insurance is a relatively new concept in the insurance industry that caters to pet owners’ needs while adhering to Islamic principles.
