Why Does World Never Fully Satisfy?
Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
Question
Why does the dunya fail to meet my needs and expectations?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate.
The longing you feel is real, and it is telling you something true. The world (dunya) does not fulfill you because Allah Most High did not make it to fulfill you. He made it to test you. This is the Quranic answer, and the answer that brings rest.
This World Was Made for Testing
Allah Most High says:
«الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا»
“It is He who created death and life to test which of you is best in deed.” [Quran 67:2]
The commentators read the verb “to test” as the governing wisdom of creation itself. This world is the abode of testing, not the abode of arrival. This is why we ask in every prayer:
«اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ»
“Guide us along the Straight Path.” [Quran 1:6]
The world is the path. This Path runs through testing, not around it. What we’re asking is for guidance to walk the testing path well, not for a different road.
Every Difficulty Carries a Gift
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “No fatigue, illness, anxiety, sorrow, harm, or distress befalls a Muslim, even the prick of a thorn, except that Allah expiates some of his sins by it.” [Bukhari; Muslim]
The commentators on this hadith point out the careful wording: “Nasab” is ordinary fatigue. “Wasab” is the lingering illness that does not lift. “Adha” covers everything that wounds the soul.
Even if a believer cannot reach the highest station of contentment (rida) within a trial, patient endurance (sabr) still secures the cleansing of sins. [Qari, Mirqat al-Mafatih]
The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) also said, “Tribulation continues to afflict the believing man and woman in their self, their child, and their wealth, until they meet Allah with no sin remaining upon them.” [Tirmidhi]
The scholars explained this as a hidden mercy. What appears outwardly as an affliction (mihna) is inwardly a gift (minha), shaped by the All-Merciful to purify the believer fully before death. [Ibn Allan, Dalil al-Falihin Sharh Riyad al-Salihin]
Seeing the World as It Is
Ibn Ata’illah (Allah have mercy upon him) names this plainly: “Do not be surprised at the occurrence of distressful matters as long as you are in this abode, because it has only manifest to you its evident nature and what is entailed by its qualities.”
Ibn Ajiba (Allah have mercy upon him) explains in his commentary that this world is built of mixture and contraction.
The pure rest the heart longs for belongs to the next abode; seeking it here is seeking water where there is none. [Ibn Ajiba, Iqadh al-Himam]
Shaykh Nuh Keller (Allah preserve him) reaches the same point in plain terms in Sea Without Shore: The believer’s task is not to draw from this world what it was never meant to give, but to walk through it toward the One who made it.
The disappointment you feel is not a sign that something is wrong. It is the world keeping its promise.
What Matters Is How You Walk It
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) also taught, “The greatness of the reward is with the greatness of the trial. When Allah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever accepts it has His pleasure; whoever resents it has His displeasure.” [Ahmad]
So when the world disappoints, understand that it is telling you the truth about itself. Lower your expectations of the world; raise your expectations of Allah. Ask Him for the Straight Path in every prayer, and mean the asking.
The heart was made for Him, and will not settle until it reaches Him.
As the great 20th-century scholar and sage, Shaykh Ahmad al-Alawi (Allah have mercy upon him) said:
فلا ترضَ بغَير اللَهِ حبّا
كلُّ شيءٍ ما دونَهُ سرابُ
نصحتُك إن كانت لك نسباً
أهلُ الذكرِ في محبوبهِم غابوا
فلا عيشَ إلّا لذوي القُربى
ليسَ لهم عن الحق حجابُ
Settle for no love but Allah’s, for all else is a fleeting mirage.
Heed this counsel, if kinship is yours: The folk of remembrance is lost in the Beloved.
No true life exists but for those brought close, forever unveiled before the Most Real.
And Allah is the giver of success and facilitation.
