Are Diamond Rings Permissible for Males?

Answered by Shaykh Irshaad Sedick

Question

What is the ruling on diamond rings for males?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate. May Allah alleviate our difficulties and guide us to what pleases Him. Amin.

It is permissible for men to wear diamond rings as long as the ring is not made of gold, does not resemble women’s rings, or symbols that are antithetical to Islam. However, there are important considerations to keep in mind:

  1. Avoiding Imitation: Men should avoid wearing diamond rings with the intention of imitating non-Muslims, such as actors or public figures, as it is prohibited to imitate those who do not follow Islam.
  2. Avoiding Pride and Extravagance: It is also impermissible to wear a diamond ring out of pride or to show off, as this can break the hearts of the poor and goes against the humble example set by the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and his Companions.

Given these considerations, it is better for a Muslim man to wear a silver ring, thereby following the Sunna and avoiding spending excessively on items that do not bring benefit in this life or the next. [Nawawi, al-Majmu‘]

I pray this is of benefit and that Allah guides us all.
