Is Referring Elderly Patients to Aged Care Homes Haram?

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch

Question

My job involves referring elderly patients to aged care homes if they have no family support. Would making these referrals be haram if the family or medical team decides? Would my income from this work be haram?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

No. It is not prohibited to refer elderly people to a care facility. If they have no family support, this is an act of worship beloved to Allah because it entails concern and care for the elderly.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “He is not from amongst us who does not show respect to elders.” [Ahmad]

Hope this helps
