Would Consuming MSG Be Haram If Banned by the Law of the Land?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Would consuming MSG be haram if banned by the law of the land, even though it is halal? Does this apply to natural sources like tomatoes and mushrooms?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
MSG, if banned by the country’s law, should be avoided due to health concerns despite it being halal.
Tomatoes and mushrooms will also be permissible to eat if they were banned unless the government restricts their consumption, in which case one should follow the purchase limit.
MSG is currently approved in most countries; however, some countries have banned its use due to health concerns for its citizens. See the link below.
May Allah (Most High) guide us to that which pleases Him, forgive us for our shortcomings, and alleviate our difficulties, Amin.
