Can I Remove Some Hair If I Am Sacrificing (Qurban)?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question

Assalamu ‘Alaykum.

I am not cutting my nails and hair during the ten days of Dhul Hijjah as part of Qurban.

I wanted to ask if it’s allowed to pluck odd hairs I get on my face. I am female but get the odd hair on my chin and upper lip, which are very coarse and thick and noticeable, and I was wondering if I still have to leave this during these ten days or if these can be removed as an exception due to them not being normal for a female?

Answer

Wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.

I pray you are well.

You may remove those odd hairs if you wish. It is recommended not to remove one’s hair and nails – unless they have grown to the point where it is wajib to remove them.

Doing so would not be sinful; but merely sub-optimal. (Ibn Abidin, Radd al Muhtar)

Remember to rejoice in favor of Allah. The ability to obey and worship Him is a tremendous gift – let alone the rewards and forgiveness that come with the sacrifice.

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.
