Can I Set Aside Zakat and Distribute It Gradually Through the Year?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question

When zakat becomes due, may one set aside the funds and distribute them gradually over the year, or must the full amount be paid out immediately?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

In short, yes, it is permitted to distribute zakat gradually throughout the year, provided there is no undue delay once it becomes due.

The superior practice, however, is to give gradually but early, paying in advance, before the year completes, and distributing across the year to those in need.

Allah Most High urges hastening to good, and the believer who plans his or her zakat ahead embodies this disposition.

Zakat: When It Is Due, and The Issue of Delays

Zakat becomes due once a lunar year (hawl) passes on wealth at the zakatable minimum (nisab). Once due, it must be discharged without unreasonable delay. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

Delaying one’s zakat without excuse is somewhat disliked (makruh tanzihan).  With an excuse, slight delays are excused. However, excessive delays are prohibitively disliked and sinful. [ibid.]

Ibn Abidin and others define the sinful delay as delaying to the next zakat year.

The Recommended Way: Give It Early

The Hanafis also permit, and indeed recommend, paying zakat in advance, before the year’s end. This way, it can be distributed throughout the year. Two benefits flow from this practice:

(1) It lets you identify deserving recipients carefully and match your giving to their ongoing needs.

(2) It also expresses the noble disposition of hastening to good, racing toward what Allah Most High loves.

Allah Most High says, “And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and to a Garden whose breadth is the heavens and the earth, prepared for the godfearing.” [Quran 3:133; Keller, The Quran Beheld]

Allah Most High also says, Compete in racing toward good works.” [Quran 5:48; Keller, The Quran Beheld]

Zakat planned and given early is one of the clearest forms of this race in good works.

Hastening Is the Mark of the Righteous

Zakat is a trust (amana) placed in your hands by Allah Most High.

Discharge it deliberately, not under the pressure of a deadline. Plan a year in advance: identify recipients, set a monthly or quarterly schedule, and pay forward where you can.

This way, your charity will reach those in need at the right times, and your heart will know the joy of fulfilling the right of Allah eagerly rather than belatedly.

And Allah knows best.
