Can Muslims Use Perfume Bottles With Mythological Symbols?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
Question
Is it permissible to use perfume bottles that display mythological symbols or figures, such as the Medusa logo, if they are not displayed openly?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
The ruling on the permissibility of the use of bottled perfume does not change based on a tangential factor such as the design logo on the bottle. This is based on a maxim: subsidiary issues are not singled out with rulings. [Ibn Nujaym, al-Ashbah wa al-Nazai’r]
One should additionally refrain from displaying the logo in their homes or workplaces if they are truly antithetical to Islamic values. This is in addition to the difference of opinion regarding displaying images in the home.
