Do Psychotic Episodes Excuse Missing Daily Prayers?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Am I still obligated to pray while taking antipsychotic medication for drug-induced psychosis, given that I am currently stable but managing a mental health condition?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question. Your hardship is a test from Allah that brings spiritual reward, wiping sins, and raising your rank in the Hereafter.
Religious Obligations During Psychotic Episodes
Jurists and legal theorists define insanity as a state in which the mind is impaired, preventing the affected individual from acting or speaking in a normal, rational manner. It also hinders one’s ability to distinguish between good and bad matters and their consequences. [Mahbubi, al-Tawdih, Taftazani, al-Talwih]
During psychotic episodes, if you’re mentally unable to function rationally, you’re not held accountable for missing prayers.
If the episode lasts more than a day, the time of five prayers, no makeup prayers are required. If shorter, try to make up prayers when you recover. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
Continue seeking treatment and support; relief is possible, and patience brings great reward. Like the woman with epilepsy promised Paradise, your trial may also be a path to Jannah.
Given the seriousness of your condition, consider asking someone to help you maintain a written record for future reference. Please continue to seek support from mental health professionals alongside your spiritual efforts, while staying in touch with reliable scholars and religious individuals. May Allah grant you ease and healing.
