How Can I Deal with Excessive Wind During the Prayer?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi

Question

I struggle with gas issues that sometimes require me to repeat wudu multiple times for a single prayer, while other times, I don’t need to repeat it at all. The gas usually comes from the back but occasionally from the front, and I’m unsure if I need to distinguish between them.

Should I consider myself da’im al-hadath since it is not constant? I also get stressed about whether I need to repeat my prayer when I pass gas, especially with Taraweeh coming up. How should I approach this?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

I pray this finds you in the best of states.

To determine if you are an excused person, this is how you should approach this issue: The Fiqh of Chronic Excuses and Ablution

But don’t fall prey to misgivings. If you doubt the reality of your winds, you should ignore them. Please read this answer carefully: Key Principles Relating to Certainty, Doubt, and Baseless Misgivings (waswasa).

Allah, Most High, says:

“Allah desires ease for you; He does not desire difficulty for you.” [Quran, 2:185]

And Allah knows best.
Wassalam
