If I Pray Qada Prayers at Night, Do I Also Get the Reward of Qiyam al-Layl?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch

Question

If I recite 100 or 1000 verses at night during qada or mixed prayers, will I receive the rewards mentioned for such recitation, or is it exclusive to nafl prayers?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

The rewards mentioned by the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) regarding reciting a certain number of verses during the night vigil prayer (qiyam al-layl) are attained regardless of the type of prayer performed.

Whether one does a voluntary prayer or a makeup obligatory prayer, if they perform it at during the night, they will have the reward of night vigil (qiyam al-layl) and if done after one has slept, it will count as tahajjud. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

Hope this helps
