Question

I earn income by setting up and maintaining automated workflows for businesses, using pre-built templates to ensure proper operation and provide ongoing support. I do not create the tools but ensure their proper functioning. Is earning income from this service fully halal?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question about Sharia compliance in such types of jobs.

Your job is to set up and maintain automated digital workflows for businesses, using templates to configure, monitor, and troubleshoot these systems. These tasks are permissible, and the income from these tasks is also permissible. You are not sinful or aiding sin if the company’s customers misuse them.

Best Earnings Are Honest Business and Personal Labor

Hani’ ibn Niyar reported: The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) was asked, “What are the best earnings?” The Prophet said, “It is an honest sale or a man’s work with his hands.” [Ahmad]

The permissibility of income depends on the nature of the work itself. Your income will be considered permissible (halal) as long as the work is permissible and you fulfill the required tasks. [Zayla‘i, Tabyin al-Haqa’iq]

Permissibility Rooted in the Nature of Core Work

As a guiding principle, one should note that income is permissible if the core work is halal and free from prohibited activities. Indirect involvement doesn’t automatically invalidate income but warrants caution and should be minimized.

And Allah knows best.
