Question

I notice my father consistently recites Ayat al-Kursi after prayer. Is it obligatory?

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger sent as a mercy to the worlds, our Master and Prophet, Muhammad, and his Family and Companions.

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi after prayer is not obligatory for a Muslim; rather, it is a recommended Sunna. This is based on the statement of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace):

“Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every prescribed prayer, nothing stands between him and entering Paradise except death.” [Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir; Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

May Allah bless the Prophet Muhammad and give him peace, and his Family and Companions.
