Is Pig Leather Purified After Tanning?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch

Question

Can I follow the opinion that pig leather is purified after tanning due to misgivings (waswasa) that I suffer from?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

There is no recognized opinion in the Hanafi school that says that pigskin is purified after tanning.

You are not required to investigate the source of all leather. The majority of leather products are made from other than pig. As little as 11% of leather products are made from pigs.

Thus stick to the basis, which is that everything is pure until proven otherwise. [Ibn Nujaym, al-Ashbah wa al-Nazair]

If you are certain that you own a leather product made from pig, if it is something that is worn or carried, get rid of it and do not pray with it. Other than that ignore.

Hope this helps
