Is Working on Animation With Unlawful Content Permissible?

Question

I have been hired for a small animated series, and it appears the two main characters are gay. Should I avoid only those scenes, or leave the project?

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

Animation as a craft is, in itself, permissible. What is not permitted is to work directly on material that portrays what is unlawful as good or acceptable.

It is important to recognize the wrong inwardly, avoid direct involvement, and know that the higher path—if you are able—is to leave the project entirely.

May Allah reward you for pausing to seek guidance before proceeding. This concern is more valuable than any contract.

The Trade Is Lawful; the Specific Work May Not Be

Let us begin with what is clear. Animation and 3D modeling are, in principle, lawful professions within the guidelines our scholars have outlined for the depiction of animate life. The craft itself is not the issue.

The problem is cooperation.

Allah Most High says: “And aid one another in devotion to your Lord in every good and godfearingness, and do not aid one another in sin and transgression; And fear Allah: Verily Allah is unsparing in reprisal.” [Quran 5:2; Keller, The Quran Beheld]

Distinguishing Between Direct and Indirect Assistance in Sin

Our scholars have explained that this command distinguishes between direct and indirect assistance in what is wrong. Animating the two main characters in scenes that establish or promote their relationship is direct involvement.

Tasks such as modeling a building, lighting a corridor, or working on background elements are not direct participation.

The first is direct involvement in the impermissible; the second is general work on a project that may contain some impermissible elements, and its ruling is lighter.

Therefore, your choice is not necessarily all-or-nothing. You may request that your supervisor assign you to scenes involving the relationship. Studios often reassign tasks, and such requests are usually manageable.

If they accommodate your request, you may continue with the permissible work. If you are required to animate those scenes, then it would be best to step away.

Regardless of your decision regarding the work, it is essential to maintain clarity in your heart.

What the series promotes is not permissible, and it is important to recognize this inwardly and not become desensitized to it. Prolonged exposure can affect one’s judgment.

What Is Lawful, and What Is Better

There is a higher course, and I encourage you to consider it. What is permitted is not always what is best.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt.” [Tirmidhi; Nasaʾi]

You reached out because you felt uneasy about this matter. This unease is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was referring to. Do not dismiss this concern as mere scrupulosity.

It is a sound instinct about the nature of this work, and the Prophetic guidance is to follow such caution rather than to reason it away.

Reflect also on what you are presenting to Allah.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “Allah is pure and accepts only what is pure,” and then described the man who travels long, disheveled and dust-covered, stretching his hands to the sky, “O Lord, O Lord!” while his food, drink, and clothing are unlawful. “So how could he be answered?” [Muslim]

What you earn from this project becomes your sustenance and clothing and may affect whether your prayers are answered. This is something to weigh carefully.

Leaving Costs Less Than It Looks

If you choose to leave, do so with contentment and trust in Allah. No one loses by leaving something for the sake of Allah, regardless of what the immediate outcome may seem.

You are at the start of your career, and you have realized that you do not wish to build it on anything questionable. This is a blessed beginning.
