Hajj: So Much More Than Just A Gathering, by Ustadh Salim Moeladawilah

Should I Delay Hajj to Help Fund a Sibling’s Wedding?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Faraz A. Khan

Question: I meet the requirements for Hajj and, thus, am planning to go this year Inshallah as I have yet to do my fard Hajj.
However, parents are not happy as they would want me to use the money to contribute to a siblings wedding later this year(anticipated to be an expensive one).

Can something like this affect one’s Islamic obligation of going on Hajj?

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health states.

No, the obligation of performing hajj certainly takes precedence over saving money for a sibling’s wedding. Be polite and respectful with your parents, but fulfill your duties to Allah Most High.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “There is no obedience to creation if it entails disobedience to the Creator.” [Tabarani, Mu`jam Kabir; Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba]

Having said that, be creative and come up with other ways to support and participate in your sibling’s wedding. Show your parents and the rest of the family your full enthusiasm and joy at the blessed occasion, and be prophetic in your love and treatment of them.

And Allah knows best.
wassalam
