What Is the Difference Between Begging and Asking for Help With Money?

Question

I am confused as to the difference between begging and asking someone else for help with money. If I were for example to ask a friend to help me pay for my internet service so I can use my Wi-Fi then would this be begging since it is not something that is considered a necessity that I ask my friend to cover?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

What you are doing is just requesting your friend to support you and do you a favor by paying for the internet services. As long as your intention does not consist of any of the following it is not considered begging. See the links below.

The begging that is prohibited is of the following types:

  • Asking without dire necessity. Necessity is defined as not having sufficient provisions for that day.
  • Asking in a persistent or degrading manner. [Shaybani, Kitab al-Kasb]
