What Is The Ruling Of Silhouettes?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question

Assalam Alaykum.

There are logos of all federal states in my passport (non-Muslim country), of which a state has a cross, other animate pictures. There is an animate being in front of the passport, which is a shade but almost like a drawing. What is the ruling of this?

Answer

Wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.

I pray you are well.

What you described sounds like a silhouette. They are permissible to draw, and praying in their presence does not affect the validity of the prayer. This is the same for all non-detailed images, even if they are of living beings. (Ibn Abidin, Radd al Muhtar)

You don’t have to worry about such matters. As the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Indeed, [the practice of] the religion is ease itself.“ (Bukhari) If you are unsure of something, ask us again.

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.
