Will Forgetfulness Prostration Be Needed If One Returns to Recite Duas?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

  1. If someone forgets to recite durud in salah and realizes he had omitted it while reciting dua-e-masura and he goes back to recite it and then re-recites dua-e-masura and says salam without Sajda as-sahw. Is salah valid?
  2. Is the ruling same for all similar situations like in fatiha and surah after it?
  3. What if someone is doubtful about omission or if he wants to correct a mistake?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

Answer One

Yes, your prayer will be valid. However, repetition like this and making it a habit will create ever more doubts, and you will end up doing it even during the slightest of doubt.

There is no forgetfulfulness prostration (sajda al-sahw) for omitting a sunna or phrase of remembrance (dhikr), except for omitting the mandatory requisite of Quranic recitation, all or part of tashahhud, or the qunut altogether in witr. [Tahtawi, Mukhtar]

Answer Two

The ruling for fatiha and three verses or its equivalence after it is mandatory. It is necessary to recite some Quranic recitation or sura immediately after fatiha. If one forgets to recite surah fatiha and ends up reciting it twice in any one of the first two rakats, prostration of forgetfulness (sajda al-sahw) becomes necessary due to delaying a mandatory (wajib) which is the recitation of another sura or the equivalent of three verses.  [Tahtawi]

Answer Three

One just simply performs a forgetfulness prostration (sajda al-sahw).  [Tahtawi]

Ignoring the Misgivings

I would like to humbly advise you, when a person starts committing himself to the religion, shaytan plays on a person’s commitment in his matters of faith, purity and prayer, and incites him in every way. So, follow the sunna of the Prophet, make constant duas and try to ignore the misgivings, this is often the best cure. Also, try to perform all your fard prayers in congregation, ideally in a masjid, or with others when at work or when cannot make it to the masjid.
