Does Allah Understand Me? Knowing Allah’s Mercy and the Wisdom of the Difficulties in Life

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question:

I know that Allah understands me, but it just doesn’t feel like that. How do I know that Allah understands me?

Answer:

Walaikum assalam,

I hope you’re doing well, insha’Allah. Thinking about our relationship with Allah Most Merciful is a blessed act and can open the doors of good in your life.

Allah Most High is our creator—the Creator and Sustainer of all things. He Knows all things, completely, eternally.

In the Verse of the Throne, Allah Most High tells us about Himself:

“Allah! There is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills. His Throne encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Most High, the Greatest.” [Quran, 2.255]

How Do I Know Allah Understands Me?

Allah has chosen to deal with all creation through encompassing Mercy.

This life is a test. Some of the tests are difficult, bitter, and challenging. Allah Most High tells us, “Truly, we have created the human in toil and struggle.” [Quran, 90.4]

But its mercy and good is manifest in both
(a) eternal, multiplied reward; and
(b) the contentment, serenity, and joy that believers who have steadfastness (sabr), gratitude (shukr), and trust (tawakkul) in Allah Most High.

This passage from the Quran tells us the Prayer of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) and Allah Most High’s response and promises:

“….This is only a test from You—by which You allow whoever you will to stray and guide whoever You will. You are our Guardian. So forgive us and have mercy on us. You are the best forgiver. Ordain for us what is good in this life and the next. Indeed, we have returned to You.” Allah replied, “I will inflict My torment on whoever I will. But My mercy encompasses everything. I will ordain mercy for those who shun wrong, give zakat, and believe in Our Revelation. [Quran, 7.155-156]

Allah cares for us. He loves us. His Mercy is waiting for us. We just need to have certitude in this, to seek it, and to strive with steadfastness and gratitude.
