Does Ovulation Discharge Nullify Ablution?

Shafi'i Fiqh

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

I want to ask about the ruling on certain discharges. I know that the involuntary daily discharge that is experienced by all women called leucorrhoea is pure. The ovulation discharge comes from the uterus. This is also involuntary discharge, but it is considered impure as it came from a deeper part, and it may get mixed with the arousal discharge because that also comes from a deeper area.

After some research, I found that arousal discharge comes from another place. So, is the ovulation discharge still considered impure if we know where it comes from? Do leucorrhoea and ovulation break wudu if it comes out?

Answer

Thank you for your question. May Allah reward you for your effort and sincerity in seeking knowledge.

Ovulation Discharge

Cervical mucus during ovulation nullifies the wudu in the Shafi’i school, and it is known that it does not come from the same source as arousal discharge. She must renew her ablution if it exits and it is impure, the ruling is the same for arousal discharge (madhy).

The daily normal discharge (leucorrhoea) that a woman gets is considered pure, and she does not need to remove it from her clothing. If it exits to the area that is visible when she is squatting, she just renews her ablution.
