Does Dirt Prevent the Validity of Wudu?

Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi
Question:

Assalam Alaykum

I walk barefoot at my home, and my feet get dirty. Do I have to scratch the dirt or dust every time I perform wudu? I don’t know which kind of dirt prevents water reaches the skin.

Do we have to wash or wipe our arms up to the elbows? I am confused because scholars in videos seem to wipe their arms.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
Assalam’alaykum,
I pray this finds you in the best of states.
1. Dirt on the skin is excused and doesn’t prevent the validity of wudu. [ Nur al-Idah]

Wax on the skin is an example of a barrier that prevents the validity of wudu. [ Nur al-Idah]

2. In wudu, we have to wash our arms up to the elbows.

Allah Most High has specifically commanded us to “wash” our faces, arms, and feet. [Quran, 5.6]

Washing (ghasl) is for water to flow over the limb. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

In order to perform valid washing, water must have flowed on the limb, and at least two drops must have fallen from the limb. [ Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar  ]

This is what is achieved in the video below by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, may Allah protect him:
