Question:
Is it Allowed to Stop Following a Madhab After Following One?
Answer:
Assalam alaykum wa rahmatullah
Dear questioner,
May Allah bless you and increase you in good.
Following Scholarship
Allah Most High says, “Ask the people of remembrance, if you do not know…” [Qur’an; 21:7]
The people of remembrance here refer to the scholars. Thus referring to those who have knowledge of the religion is a general obligation, without which one cannot live in the obedience of Allah Most High. [Qurtubi, al-Jam’i Li Ahkam al-Qur’an]
For us to abandon that guidance after Allah guided us to it is simply following our desires. Ignore these whisperings and connect to scholars who can always help you navigate the safe terrain of the rightly guided path.
The greatest of our scholars have always followed legal schools until they reached a level where they did not need to follow every single matter because they reached the lofty level of independent interpretation [ijtihad]. For those who are not qualified to do so, they must follow a madhhab.
