Does Ignorance Excuse Missing Ghusl Before Prayer?
Shafi'i Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Irshaad Sedick
Question
If someone experiences ejaculation but is unaware that it requires ghusl, and prays thinking they are pure, are their prayers valid, and must they be made up once they learn the ruling?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
You should repeat those prayers, as being free from the major and minor states of impurity is a condition of the prayer’s validity, and ignorance is not an excuse. [Nawawi, Minhaj al-Talibin]
And Allah knows best.
