Is Wearing a Four-Leaf Clover Necklace Permissible?
Shafi'i Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Irshaad Sedick
Question
Is wearing a four-leaf clover necklace as a fashion accessory permissible if I do not believe in or intend any superstitious meaning?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
May Allah alleviate our difficulties and guide us to what pleases Him. Amin.
It is permissible to wear a four-leaf clover necklace as a fashion accessory, provided that you do not believe in its superstitious connotations and there are no other problematic factors, such as associations with false beliefs, religious symbols, or un-Islamic messaging.
While the four-leaf clover has historically been linked to “luck” and superstition, such symbols become problematic when exclusively and recognizably associated with false beliefs, other religions, or un-Islamic practices. It would not be impermissible when such associations are no longer widespread, prominent, or strong, and the symbol is simply used as a neutral design.
Still, Muslims should be cautious of uncritically adopting foreign symbols, especially when our Muslim cultures and traditions offer rich alternatives in beauty, symbolism, and cultural expression.
And Allah knows best.
