Should I Pray That I Marry My Beloved Who Left Me?

Answered by Ustada Shazia Ahmad

Question

The man I had intentions of marrying has fully cut me off. We kept it halal for the sake of our marriage to be blessed. He recently has been suffering through his battles which he didn’t want to talk to me about. Rather he just cut me out of his life, pushed me away and told me to leave him. I tried working around this and being there as support for him but he just kept telling me to go. I truly believed in my heart he was the one I’d marry, I don’t know if I should be praying for God to bring him back to me or let go. I believe in praying for the impossible to become possible but I don’t know if that’s what I should be doing.

Answer

Thank you for your question. I empathize with your pain and suffering but I feel that when Allah Most High sends a situation like this, it’s best to just accept it for what it is and move forward.

Du`a

Allah Most High has told us in the Quran, “[…] Perhaps you dislike something which is good for you and like something which is bad for you. Allah knows and you do not know.” [Quran, 2:216]

Your Lord knows what is better for you and He decrees what He deems best for His servant. If this man has left you, you should not give it further thought. You should turn your attention to your Lord, making dhikr, praying, and increasing in knowledge. Make tawba (repentance) daily, especially for having been in a relationship with him, even though it wasn’t physical. Thank Him for your blessings every night. Ask him to send you a pious husband who is right for you and to aid you in breaking off any attachments. Allah Most High may have saved you from something horrible.

All goodness

Find solace in the following hadith: The Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Wondrous is the affair of a believer for there is good in every affair of his and this is not the case with anyone else except the believer. If he has an occasion to feel delighted, he thanks (Allah), thus there is a good for him in it, and if he is harmed, he endures it patiently, thus there is a good for him in it.” [Muslim]
