How Do We Understand Allah’s Plan and Guidance of Hearts?

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question

Regarding Allah’s Plan: When Allah decrees a specific outcome for worldly matters, such as a career path, health, or marriage, how does He influence human hearts toward that outcome without compulsion? If a specific job or marriage is decreed for an individual, by what means does Allah incline the heart toward it?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

In Islamic theology, the relationship between Divine Decree (Qadar) and human will is considered a profound mystery, frequently referred to as the “secret of Allah.”

Scholars explain that, although everything is known and written by Allah, He influences human hearts through inspiration (ilham) and facilitation (tawfiq) without depriving individuals of free will.

Allah’s Guidance in the Quran

Allah Most High says: “Say: He is Allah, One; Allah, the Besought of All.” [Quran 112:1–2; Keller, The Quran Beheld]

And He says: “Allah: there is no god but He, the Living, the Sustainer of All. Neither slumber nor sleep overtaketh Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.” [Quran 2:255]

And He says: “He knoweth what entereth the earth and what cometh forth from it, and what descendeth from the sky and what mounteth up into it; and He is with you wherever you be. And Allah is all-seeing of what you do.” [Quran 57:4]

And He says: “With Him are the keys of the Unseen; none knoweth them but He. And He knoweth what is in the land and the sea; not a leaf falleth but He knoweth it, nor a grain in the darknesses of the earth, nor anything moist or dry, but it is in a Manifest Book.” [Quran 6:59]

The following six responses from SeekersGuidance provide further insight into this concept:

Belief in Destiny (Qadar) and Human Responsibility

This response clarifies that while Allah creates all actions, humans possess “choice” (ikhtiyar). Allah’s knowledge of individual choices does not compel action; rather, it reflects His perfect awareness of eventual decisions.

Is Marriage Pre-Destined?

This response explains that marriage is considered part of one’s rizq (provision). Allah may influence hearts by creating an inclination toward a specific partner, but the responsibility to act with integrity and make a choice remains with the individual.

Can Supplication (Dua) Change Destiny?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that nothing changes decree except Dua. This article explains that there are two types of decree: “Suspended” (mu’allaq) and “Absolute” (mubram). Allah may influence an individual’s heart to make a specific Dua, which may then lead to a particular outcome.

How Do I Know if a Decision Is From My Ego or From Allah?

This response discusses how Allah guides the heart. If a heart is purified through dhikr, Allah may place an inclination (khawatir) within it. When a path becomes accessible and brings tranquility to the heart, it is often considered a sign of Divine facilitation toward what has been decreed.

The Reality of Tawakkul (Trust in Allah) and Effort

This response addresses the balance between personal effort and trust in Allah. It explains that Allah influences outcomes by opening or closing opportunities in the worldly realm, which naturally shifts an individual’s focus and desires toward the path He has intended.

Understanding the Meaning of Divine Decree

This response provides an in-depth exploration of the Ash’ari and Maturidi perspectives. It emphasizes that Allah’s “Will” pertains to what occurs, while His “Pleasure” relates to human choices. Allah may facilitate a particular career by placing a “yearning” in an individual’s heart for that specific field.

In summary, Allah guides the human heart to desire what He has already willed, so that when the outcome occurs, it is experienced as the fulfillment of a personal journey.
