Is the Use Of Cream Containing Marijuana Permissible?

Question: Asalamu alaikum, My dad has gout on both feet resulting in a lot of pain. He has prescription medications, but none seem to ease his pain. Can he use a topical cream with marijuana in it to alleviate the pain?

Answer:

Wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.

I pray you are well.

In all likeliness, the cream will contain CBD oil, which is derived from marijuana but lacks the psychoactive element that intoxicates anyone who consumes it. The use of this cream is permissible.

Even if marijuana itself was to be used in the production of the cream its use would be permissible – provided it did not lead to intoxication – as the plant is not impure intrinsically.

Remind him to turn to Allah before taking any medication, and to ask Allah to completely heal him. He can also pray to be directed to a permanent cure. That’s not difficult for Allah.

May Allah grant you all the best of both worlds.
