Can I Rely on ChatGPT for Islamic Guidance?
Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
Question
Is it permissible to turn to ChatGPT for guidance on Islamic matters? I often ask it, but I have doubts about whether it is telling me the right thing, and I have a lot of anxiety around religious questions.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful and Compassionate.
May Allah calm your heart and make seeking Him a means of ease rather than anxiety.
You may use a tool like ChatGPT for general orientation — to get your bearings on a topic — but you should not rely on it for religious rulings or spiritual guidance. Sacred knowledge is taken from trustworthy, qualified people, not from an unverified source that cannot weigh your circumstances and may simply be wrong.
Allah Most High says, “So ask those given the revealed Remembrance before, if you know not” [Quran 16:43; Keller, The Quran Beheld]. The verse points to a person of knowledge, not merely a source of information.
Where to Root Your Learning
Root your learning in two things. First, learn through reliable scholars: SeekersGuidance offers free, structured courses taught by qualified teachers, and there may be trustworthy scholars and circles in your own community worth seeking out.
Second, when a specific question arises, bring it to a living teacher. They will not only give you a sound answer; they will help you place it in its proper context and apply it to your situation — and that guidance is invaluable in a way no tool can replace.
A Word on Religious Anxiety
Scrupulous worry often pushes us to demand an instant answer, and an instant answer from an unreliable source can feed the very anxiety it promised to settle. Steady learning from people you trust is what brings the heart to rest. (And yes — choosing the Hanafi school in our form is perfectly fine; a school of fiqh, or madhhab, is simply a reliable, complete path of practice that you follow for consistency and soundness.)
Take Your Religion from Those Who Live It
The principle is old and simple: this knowledge is religion, so look to whom you take your religion from. Let a trusted teacher, not an algorithm, be your reference — and let your questions be a door to learning rather than a source of fear.
And Allah knows best.
