Is Using Technology for Quranic Education Permissible?

Answered by Shaykh Anas al-Musa

Question

What is the ruling on using modern technology in the teaching and memorization of the Quran?

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger sent as a mercy to the worlds, our Master and Prophet, Muhammad, and his Family and Companions.

The use of modern technology in teaching and memorizing the Quran is positive, beneficial, permissible, and even recommended, especially in our current era, where technology permeates all aspects of life and is accessible to everyone. This aligns with the general meaning of the Prophet’s (Allah bless him and give him peace) statement:

“The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.” [Bukhari]

Benefits and Considerations in Using Technology

Indeed, technology today has transformed educational concepts and methods, making knowledge more accessible and expanding learning opportunities in unprecedented ways. Utilizing it can thus be a powerful tool in the teaching and memorization of the Quran.

Modern technology can simplify learning processes through educational applications, interactive programs, and websites that enhance reading and memorization skills. It is essential, however, to use this technology wisely and with awareness, ensuring the accuracy of Quranic texts in applications, free from errors or alterations. Therefore, supervision and oversight by qualified specialists are recommended.

Maintaining a Balance Between Technical and Spiritual Aspects

While modern technology is important in Quranic education, the spiritual and human dimensions remain crucial to this process. Striking a balance between the technical and spiritual aspects is necessary to fully and effectively achieve the goals of religious learning.

May Allah bless the Prophet Muhammad and give him peace, and his Family and Companions.
