The standardization of the qira’at selection process (Ikhtiyar) for the Qurra involves choosing authentic, transmitted recitation modes that honor the diversity of Arabic dialects while ensuring the strict accuracy of the Quranic text, as demonstrated by the grammatical yet meaningful variations in Surat al-Rum. Standardizing the Qira’at Selection Process (Ikhtiyar)
Biographies of the companions and their successors show that hundreds of them served as Quran teachers across the Muslim world.
Some dedicated Qurra from the companions had many students and became key links in thousands of chains of Quranic transmission: “The transmission authority of those companions solidified the ordering of the variant qira’at and synchronized the structure of the subsequent system-readings (ikhtiyar) attributed to different Qurra.”
The ikhtiyar phenomenon traces back to the companions’ students (tabi’un) and is even attributed to some of the companions.
An ikhtiyar was named after a reciter (qari) if he organized a set of phonetic principles (usul) regarding articulation, inclination, assimilation, lengthening of lone vowels, etc., as well as the pronunciation of specific words in individual passages. Therefore, a reading of so-and-so doesn’t mean that the qari after whom it’s named invented it. Instead, it indicates that he narrated the Quran from many companions and successors, mastered regional pronunciations, and eventually developed a method for adopting and teaching it.
