What Should I Do as My Wife Needs Sex during Her Period?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

During my wife’s period, she experiences pain and minimal blood flow, but her sex drive increases. Sex relieves her pain and normalizes blood flow, but without it, spotting lasts over 10 days.

We know sex during menstruation is forbidden. How can we handle this situation?

Answer

Thank you for your question. What you need to do is follow the command of Allah Most High and not touch her between the navel and knees during her menstruation.

Clear Prohibition

Allah (Most High) has told us clearly in His book:

“They ask you (O Prophet) about menstruation. Say, ‘Beware of its harm! So keep away, and do not have intercourse with your wives during their monthly cycles until they are purified. When they purify themselves, then you may approach them in the manner specified by Allah. Surely Allah loves those who always turn to Him in repentance and those who purify themselves.’” [Quran, 2:222]

It is haram to have intercourse during menstruation by unanimous consensus. You must both repent and intend never to do it again. Please give in charity for your mistake: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said,

“If one of you has intercourse with his wife whilst she is menstruating, then he should give a dinar (of gold) in charity if the blood was red, and half a dinar if yellow.” [Abu Dawud]

Manage Another Way

I urge her to see a doctor to solve her issues, perhaps use pain medicine, or perhaps use some natural remedies. She should also be active and exercise, as this reduces one’s period length and strength. Kissing, embracing, and being affectionate are allowed during menstruation. I am certain that if she seeks another way, she will find it, sex during menstruation can’t possibly have healing or blessings in it.

May Allah give you the best of this world and the next.
